Throughout WOW’s lore, there have been many polarizing characters who have danced around between the forces of good and evil.
If the stories of the fallen Prince Arthas or the torturous transformation of the noble Elf-turned Banshee Queen, Sylvanas Windrunner are anything to come by, it is that allegiances are always ever shifting in the chaotic world of Azeroth.
Another prime example, and the main antagonist for the upcoming The Burning Crusade Classic (TBCC) expansion, is in the form of The Betrayer, Illidan Stormrage.
His undying love for the Kaldorei (Night-Elves) has brought him through an epic journey of love, power, betrayal, deceit and redemption, all to protect his own people through ways which he deems is misunderstand by his allies, especially his own brother, the Night-Elf leader, Malfurion Stormrage.
A HERO’S RISE AND FALL
Born twins, Illidan Stormrage and Malfurion Stormrage were amongst the three pillars (besides Tyrande Whisperwind) which would one day become the primary leaders of the Night-Elven society as a whole.
Although Malfurion grew to become a mighty Forest Druid capable of manifesting Nature’s wrath, Illidan was more talented in the raw energies of magic.
Their exploits were not universally known until the coming of the first Burning Legion, during the infamous worldly struggles of the War of the Ancients.
The Kaldorei’s beautiful ruler, Queen Azshara had become influenced by the unlimited forces and promise of unending power from the Dark Titan, Sargeras.
Corrupting the Night-Elves’ sacred Well of Eternity, Queen Azshara and her followers sought to unleash Sargeras and his endless legions of demonic forces onto the unsuspecting world of Azeroth.
Forming the Kaldorei Resistance, Illidan banded together with Malfurion and Tyrande to join other heroic characters such as Kur’talos Ravencrest and Jarod Shadowsong in combating their once beloved queen.
At one point, due to Illidan’s reluctance to accept about destroying the Well of Eternity, he had seemingly betrayed his own allies and partook in Queen Azshara’s efforts to continue protecting the now-tainted Well, hoping to secure a portal to allow passage for Sargeras and his menacing demons into Azeroth.
Eventually, it was all a ploy as Illidan used his time amongst the enemies to gather crucial information which led to the defeat of Queen Azshara and her accomplices, while he secretly schemed to destroy the Burning Legion once and for all.
During the final fight against Queen Azshara and the Burning Legion, the heroes’ efforts in reversing the portal’s matrix succeeded in sucking back all the demons that have been unleashed upon Azeroth.
Still, this would come at a very great cost as the Well of Eternity was destroyed, tearing masses of land around the world apart as a result (now known as the Great Sundering).
As for Azshara and her people, they were brought down deep within the ocean after the land faltered, but did not die due to interference by the Old Gods, transforming them into the wretched Naga instead.
However, Illidan was not done though, as he previously took a few vials of the corrupted well and remade a new Well of Eternity atop Mount Hyjal (hoping to remake a new source of magical energy for him and the Night-Elves), an act which angered all his allies and duly earned him the moniker The Betrayer.
Seeing his brother irredeemable out of his hunger for magic and lust for power, Illidan was later sentenced to a prison deep within Mount Hyjal itself, languishing for over 10,000 years before the coming of the Third War.
